Icacos in the dry season

December to April is the best stretch for the Fajardo cays, and the busiest. Here is what the 2026-27 dry season brings, from humpback whales to holiday crowds, and what to lock in early.

Ask anyone in Fajardo when to go to Icacos and you will hear the same months. Discover Puerto Rico calls December to April the best time, because it is the dry season. It is also high season for the whole island.

This post covers the winter weather, the chance of whales, the holiday weeks, weekdays against weekends, and which trips to book first.

The quick answer

December to April is drier and less humid, and it is the best time for Icacos. Humpback whales are common in the reserve from December to February, but no Icacos trip is a whale tour. The holiday season runs from Thanksgiving to mid-January and the high-crowd months are December to March, so book holiday dates as soon as your flights are fixed, go on a weekday, and keep an eye on winter north swells.

What is the weather like on the Fajardo cays from December to April?

Drier, less humid and a touch cooler, with January the coolest month. It still feels like summer.

ToPuertoRico.org calls December to April the high season: drier weather, lower humidity and holiday festivals, with an average around 80°F year-round and January the coolest month. Showers get more frequent from May onward.

On Icacos the sun is the thing to plan for. The island has no permanent shade, so bring a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and more water than you think. Discover Puerto Rico asks visitors to use reef-safe sunscreen and pack out every scrap of trash.

Can you see humpback whales near Icacos in winter?

Sometimes. Humpbacks are common in the La Cordillera reserve from December to February, but sightings are luck, not a promise.

The La Cordillera Reef Nature Reserve, which includes Icacos, lists humpback whales as common from December to February. Island-wide, Platea PR gives a season of late October to early April, with mid-February the best bet, and quotes a marine biologist saying the whales have been arriving later in recent years.

None of the Icacos trips on this site is sold as a whale-watching tour, so treat a tail on the horizon as a bonus. If you do see one, the rules are clear: under DRNA regulation 6766, boats keep at least 100 metres from a whale and swimmers at least 50 metres.

How busy are the holiday weeks around Fajardo?

Very. Puerto Rico's holiday season runs about 45 days, from Thanksgiving to mid-January, and the high-crowd months are December to March.

Discover Puerto Rico describes a holiday season of nearly 45 days, from Thanksgiving through the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián in mid-January. Many businesses keep limited hours or close on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Three Kings Day on 6 January, and the page recommends booking ahead.

That is your cue. If you want a boat on one of those days, book early and confirm the trip is actually running. Discover Puerto Rico even suggests Christmas Day for a beach outing.

Holiday dates fill first. The full-day catamaran has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs you nothing.

Should you go on a weekday or at the weekend?

A weekday. Weekends bring party boats, more noise and more litter on Icacos.

Discover Puerto Rico says weekdays are quieter and advises booking water taxis ahead at weekends. Travel writers describe weekend party boats anchored off the beach, with the noise and litter that come with them. If your dates are flexible, pick a Tuesday over a Saturday.

Water taxi timing matters in winter as well. The last return from Icacos is usually around 4:00 p.m., per Discover Puerto Rico, so plan your day around that. Our guide to what to do on Icacos helps you fill the hours.

What should you book ahead for winter 2026-27?

The full-day catamaran and anything on a holiday date. The smaller boats and the bio bay kayak tour also fill in high season.

The full-day catamaran listing says the boat holds up to 80 people and usually sails near full. The swim, snorkel and relax boat trip is flagged on its listing as likely to sell out, and it caps the boat at 40. Pair your Icacos day with the bio bay kayak tour in Laguna Grande, which leaves from Las Croabas at sunset.

Our rule of thumb below is an opinion, not an operator rule. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before on these listings means early booking is low risk.

Does winter swell affect Icacos boat trips?

It can. North swells in winter bring high surf and small craft advisories, and captains change plans when they hit.

Dry season is not always calm season. On 18 December 2025, Metro Puerto Rico reported a north swell with waves of about 9 to 11 feet on the north coast and Culebra, with a small craft advisory from the National Weather Service in San Juan.

The full-day catamaran listing says the captain may stop at Cayo Lobos or Palominos instead of Icacos, which is the usual answer to rough water. Check the NWS San Juan forecast the day before, and read our post on weather and cancellations for how the 24-hour window works.
