From San Juan to the sand

About this experience

Fajardo is about an hour's drive east of San Juan, and this trip takes the driving off your hands. BorinquenIslandAdventure picks you up at your hotel in San Juan, and the van takes about an hour to Las Croabas. From there a boat takes 15 to 30 minutes to reach Icacos.

On the island you get about four hours, which is a lot more than the catamarans give you. The crew sets up a camp: chairs, a tent for shade, a speaker, a volleyball and a football. Lunch is a beach BBQ with hot dogs, plus bottled water, rum and local beer, and there's a snorkel mask for the shallows.

Keep expectations simple. This is a hot dog barbecue on an island with no bathrooms, not a resort day; Discover Puerto Rico lists no restrooms or stores on Icacos. With the van it's a seven-hour day. If you have a car, the water taxi beach day gives you similar time on the sand from the same Las Croabas waterfront.
